Thapelo Mokoena Stars in New SABC 2 Telenovela ‘Pimville’

I recently attended SABC 2's cast reveal for "Pimville," the new telenovela replacing Muvhango, and chatted with lead cast member and renowned actor Thapelo Mokoena. Here's what he shared.

Congrats on "Pimville"! Since this isn't your typical kasi story but focuses on township excellence, what does black excellence mean to you?

Being called "Black Excellence" feels intimidating because I'm human with challenges like everyone else. I think of excellence not as a fixed state, but as a journey toward your goals. I'm on a good path as a storyteller, actor, entrepreneur, and family man, enjoying both the ups and downs. The fact that I'm still going suggests excellence might be within reach, even if I'm not there yet.

What drew you to this project among all the ones you've worked on?

I believe in starting from scratch. I've launched businesses and created products and wines this way. I was drawn to this opportunity to build a new world—starting a show from season one lets you interpret it however you want. I love creating and telling good stories. After discovering this was an original concept, I fell in love with the script. Being part of a story that could change the world is incredible.

Who's watching this show?

The typical South African watches our show—it's truly for everyone. From grandparents to kids, young adults to middle-aged folks—every family member will find something relatable here. Remember how Generation brought entire families together in front of the TV? That's exactly what we're doing.

I've interviewed you before. How's Bakoena Brands doing, and what else are you working on these days?

I run Bakoena Brands, which makes wines and grooming products now available at Clicks stores nationwide. I'm working to grow this business while also developing scripts for various projects. I'm thankful that my career has taken me beyond South Africa to make movies and projects across Africa, the US, and UK. My goal isn't just to be a South African artist, but to represent Africa globally. The mission to take on the world is happening, and I'm grateful for it all.

Don't miss it! Pimville premieres February 9, 2026 at 9:00 PM on SABC2 and SABC Plus.
