Last night's Savanna Newcomer Comedy Showcase took place at The Maslow Hotel in Sandton, part of the 13th Savanna Comics' Choice Comedy Awards. Celeste Ntuli, the 2025 Comedian of the Year, hosted the event. With her sharp wit and commanding stage presence, she brought credibility to this high-pressure night. I got to chat with her about the showcase and what she's working on now.

MUZI: Great to see you! This event brings together comedy lovers, media folks, and industry big shots for a night full of fresh perspectives, bold voices, and amazing talent. Why do you think showcasing these performers is so important?

CELESTE: This competition means a lot to me. I got my start in the comedy world through competitions just like this one. It's an awesome opportunity for new comics! Think of it as a crash course where you have 5 minutes to showcase your best material. All comedians need platforms like this to grow - it's exactly how I developed into the performer I am today as Celeste.

MUZI: As the 2025 Savanna Comics' Choice Comedian of the Year, what advice would you give to newcomers and fresh talent taking the stage tonight?

CELESTE: Newcomers! The great thing is you have a fresh start here. Don't hesitate to experiment with new material—step outside your comfort zone, challenge yourself, and most importantly, have fun being authentic. No need to worry about judgment since no one is familiar with your content yet. This is your chance to make your mark!

MUZI: Im just curious - do you think there's a future for comedy in this country?

CELESTE: Absolutely, comedy is the way forward, and I'm definitely part of that journey. As long as we have stages like Savanna to showcase talent, the future of comedy remains bright and promising. The next generation of comedians, myself included, will keep this art form alive and thriving for years to come.

MUZI: What projects are you currently working on, and how would you like to be remembered?

CELESTE: I want to leave a lasting legacy as the accomplished comedian I am. These days, though, I'm focusing my energy on my current project, "Celeste and the Big Dudes" taking place at The Grand West Casino from the 21st of February.
