Interview with Kalene Oliver on Her Memoir She’s a Hot Mess

We recently caught up with Kalene Oliver, a South African author, speaker, and mental health advocate. She founded The Limitless Women Hub, which supports women in business, leadership, and personal development. Kalene just launched her debut memoir, "She's a Hot Mess," and told us all about it.

MUZI: I love your memoir title "She's a Hot Mess" - it's really catchy! How did you come up with it?

KALENE: *laughs* You know, I've always been a mess - losing keys, clumsy, scattered everywhere. That reputation stuck with me, and I became "that girl who's always a mess." But when I got my ADHD diagnosis, something clicked. I wanted to heal, be honest about my struggles, and discover who I really am. That's how I came up with "She's a Hot Mess" - it captures both the chaos and the journey of making it powerful.

MUZI: Let's talk about your memoir - what inspired you to write it, and what are you hoping to achieve?

KALENE: This memoir explores mental health and the emotional struggles women face, often in silence. After receiving an ADHD diagnosis at 36, I began understanding years of internal battles differently. What seemed like inconsistency or lack of discipline was actually a neurodivergent mind struggling without proper support.

Blending honesty, humor, and raw reflection, "She's a Hot Mess" connects with women who've felt "too much" or "not enough" while quietly managing burnout and executive dysfunction.

It's more than a memoir—it's a call for greater compassion and honest conversations about ADHD and neurodiversity, especially for women whose experiences are often misunderstood.

MUZI: Who's reading this?

KALENE: This book is for anyone dealing with mental health issues, supporting someone who is, or simply wanting to learn more about mental health.

MUZI: Aside from your new book, what else are you working on?

KALENE: I founded The Limitless Women Hub, a platform that's all about empowering female entrepreneurs. Over the past six months, I've been mentoring women every Thursday, focusing on finances and entrepreneurship. It's been an incredible journey helping other women build their businesses and take control of their financial futures.
